With media reports swirling that Durant is ready to leave Golden State in free agency this summer and speculation mounting where the Warriors' star might land, a source close to the situation confirmed to Field Level Media that the National Basketball Association and Warriors were in discussions about ending his relative silence. It'd be nice if everyone could just pay attention to pick-and-roll coverage, but gossip is more interesting sometimes and we're all part of that. This time around, the drama was for a good reason that many people won't understand. I want to go to the gym and go home. Durant said. "I didn't feel like talking the last couple of weeks". Durant lashed out at the media and wondered why he has to talk to them. With social media and the access to media, it's kind of hard to dodge that type of stuff, especially when you have a little bit of controversy.
"That's just where we are".
Let us be frank, with the caveat that the choice lives inside the head of one guy who can and does change his mind: Insiders around the league think Kevin Durant is leaving the Warriors for the Knicks. KD, who was "tired of being second" way back in 2013, was still stuck there reputationally, even in ultimate victory.
"You got a dude, (The Athletic's) Ethan Strauss, who come in here, just giving his whole opinion and stuff and make it seem like it's coming from me", Durant said, in response to Strauss' recent article on Durant's disappearance. However, James' outrageous stat line (33.6 ppg, 12.0 rpg and 10.0 apg while shooting 56 percent from the field and 38 percent from three-point range) and the fact Durant was on a team with Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green made sure the player rankings remained status quo. "Nobody on this team needs to be baby-sat". Everything has to be funneled into winning a championship. Among those traded, many names, such as Marc Gasol and Nikola Mirotic were no surprise, while others, like Tobias Harris and Kristaps Porzingis, seemed to nearly come out of nowhere. No distraction - or anything that doesn't happen on that floor is going to derail our focus. I am trying to play basketball.
The other big reason Durant, who will be the most highly coveted free agent this offseason, was a clear victor at the trade deadline was the priority multiple teams placed on opening up cap room. "You know you don't care about that". I try to be the best player I can be every possession.
"So there is a level of awareness of kind of how that is on a day-to-day [basis]". Durant already draws tons of criticism online for absconding to the Golden State Warriors as a free agent, so Kanell and Botkin discuss whether or not Durant is treated fairly.
"It's the conversation you all [the media] have", he said. "So it's a little give and take, but again it's all about what you do on the floor that matters".
