The Phillies and Marlins have reached a trade that sends All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto to Philadelphia for catcher Jorge Alfaro, pitching prospects Sixto Sanchez and Will Stewart, and an worldwide bonus slot, the teams announced Thursday. According to multiple reports, the Phillies have acquired All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto from the Miami Marlins. Last year, when the Washington Nationals were looking to acquire a catcher before the trade deadline, Harper jokingly put his cap on Realmuto's head during pregame introductions at the All-Star Game.
"From our standpoint, that didn't play into the equation at all", Hill said. Realmuto has spent all four-plus seasons of his Major League Baseball career in Miami.
Realmuto voiced his displeasure for Jeter's dismantling of the team, where he asked to be traded before Spring Training last season.
The trade of Realmuto has other significance in that it represents the final "core" piece to the organization from the Jeffrey Loria-led ownership of the franchise.
The reason for that is that the Marlins asking price has been extremely high, mainly because they are unhappy with the returns they got for the other stars they traded a year ago like Giancarlo Stanton, Christian Yelich and Marcell Ozuna. Alfaro hit.262 with 10 home runs in 108 games last season.
Realmuto, 27, just finished his fourth full Major League season and still has two more years of team control before being eligible for free agency. Realmuto over his career has a.848 slugging percentage on the road and.678 at home.
Sanchez in 48 games over four seasons in the minors is 15-12 with a 2.48 ERA with 191 strikeouts in 221 1/3 innings. He hit.262 with 10 homers in his first full major league season previous year. Alfaro struck out in 40 percent of his at bats last season while walking just 18 times in 377 plate appearances.
"We have heard outstanding things about J.T. and his work ethic and his makeup and his leadership and the type of teammate he is", Klentak said. "We do like Jorge a lot and think he has a great career ahead of him".
"It's the same as Realmuto's arm", the scout said. "A pitcher who we think can develop and lead a championship rotation", Hill said.
