Petta box office collection Day 1: Rajinikanth-starrer receives a massive opening

While the film was released in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi versions in over 225 screens across Karnataka, according to Jack Manju, distributor of Petta, the decision on the Kannada version depends on whether Rajinikanth agrees to dub his voice in Kannada. While fans can not contain their excitement watching their Superstar in an ultra-stylish avatar after a long time, many celebrities have taken to social media to praise the superstar for his performance in the movie and shower their best wishes on Rajinikanth and team Petta. All praise goes to director Karthik Subbaraj. While Petta has grossed around Rs 48 crore on its first day, Viswasam raked in Rs 43 crore on its opening day at the worldwide box office. Kaala, on the other hand, had made Rs 1.44 crore in Chennai on Day 2. Most of the Kollywood, Tollywood, Hollywood, and Mollywood movies were leaked online on their sites on the same day that films got released in theatres.

Petta has, however, outperformed Ajith's Viswasam in the overseas box office.

However, both the films have been released just in time for Pongal/Sankranthi holidays. However, they are unlikely to affect the biz. of Petta and Viswasam. "Pongal is one of the biggest festivals in the state that brings the family audience to theaters, yielding a good box-office collection, especially in rural areas". It features the ensemble star cast of Vijay Sethupathi, Trisha, Simran Bagga, Bobby Simha, Megha Akash, Sanath Reddy and Nawazuddin Siddiqi.
