The PGA of America might be tempted to go for someone with a winning pedigree as Ryder Cup captain, with Davis Love III and Paul Azinger top of a very short list!
The three-time major victor is the clear favourite to succeed Thomas Bjorn at Whistling Straits, where Europe will be bidding to defend the trophy won in Paris past year.
He also served as a vice captain on three occasions, helping Paul McGinley and Thomas Bjorn record victories at Gleneagles and Le Golf National in France in 2014 and 2018 respectively.
Harrington, the third Irish captain of the Europe team in the last four stagings of the match, said he had a busy 18 months ahead and meant to make his captaincy a mix of all those he had served under.
This is not something I went into lightly.
He added: "You could look at this as being a natural progression from player to vice-captain to captain but it's not something I take on without a certain amount of trepidation".
"It's something I thought long and hard about".
"I think the standard of golf on the European Tour and the players we have on tour is going to ensure that".
"A successful captain is great".
McIlroy has played in every possible session in his five Ryder Cup appearances to date, but won just two points from his five matches in Paris and has now lost his last two singles contests - against Patrick Reed and Justin Thomas - when sent out first. It is really tough to win a Ryder Cup in America, but there is nobody more suited to taking on that challenge. Harrington, whose experience of the Ryder Cup is vast, must make sure he is just as thorough in determining who is worthy of a pick.
Harrington, who hoisted the trophy four times during an illustrious playing career, can only dream his men will unleash such heroics on the greens and fairways in America when he leads them into the fray.
"I know we're going to a new venue, it's an away match, we're going to have on average three more rookies coming in to the team". While the USA captain for 2020 has not yet been announced, 2017 Presidents Cup captain and Wisconsin native Steve Stricker is perceived as the favorite to lead the American squad in his home state.
"You know when you're going up against a guy like that that he is mentally tough and strong".
Pavard played in six of France's seven games at the World Cup finals, only missing their final group game against Denmark, and he scored his first global goal in the last-16 clash with Argentina.
Harrington said he knew what his goal would be over the next two years with respect to the players.
