Some are household names, like Facebook - which was #1 on the 2018 list but dropped several spots following a scandal-filled year. And one of the first things people do is to look for a new job.
The social networking company's ranking dropped from No. 1 for 2018 to No. 7 for 2019, according to Glassdoor's list of 100 best places to work in the United States, which is determined by employee feedback.
While Facebook was the best place to work in America previous year, Cupertino-based tech giant Apple had tumbled to number 84 in 2017 from its 36th position in 2016.
The list is based on feedback from employees who submitted a review of their company on Glassdoor between October 23, 2017 and October 21, 2018.
The tech company employees, once in love with free food, flexible works hours and resort like offices, have also started looking at how much time they are giving to their office and for what. An In-N-Out database administrator said, "They offer great training and have a great support structure", while a software engineer at Procore reported opportunities for career growth. To put into context, more than 830,000 employers are reviewed on Glassdoor and the average company rating is 3.4 out of 5.
Other tech giants in the top 50 include Google at #8, Salesforce in 11 place, Adobe at #30, Microsoft in the 34 position, Nvidia at 36, Blizzard Entertainment at 42 and SpaceX at 48. The search giant's ranking is also down from fifth place in 2018.
Bain & Company, Google and Apple are the only three companies to have made the list every year. Workers' concerns - and protests - over how the military could use Google's technology contributed to executives' decision to pull a bid for a $10 billion cloud contract with the Pentagon.
The top spot on the list this year goes to management consulting firm Bain & Company. Reviews are submitted by current and former employees.
"Most of the criticism has been external at Facebook, and we just don't see as many employees impacted by it as you might have thought", he said, noting that some reviews mentioned the bad publicity was actually helping employees "band together" and that the difference between its score (4.5) and the top score (4.6) is extremely small.
