Officials say all Taylorville Public Schools will be closed on Monday due to storm damage and for the safety of students and staff. In that same period, 55 tornadoes total have been recorded statewide during the month of December. If most are confirmed as tornadoes, Miller said that would be the most tornadoes in IL in a December storm since Dec. 18-19, 1957, when there were 21.
To put Saturday night's storms into perspective, just 14 tornadoes total have been reported in the central part of IL between 1950 and 2017, according to Miller. Trees, power lines, and buildings were destroyed. The tornado traveled at least 25 miles (40 kilometers) northeast, though investigators are still determining its end location. That tornado traveled about 7 miles (11 kilometers) just past the town of Gore. According to data from the Tornado History Project, the last time tornadoes were reported in IL in December was in 2015 when six tornados broke out. No injuries have been reported. One person was killed in Missouri.
People living in IL are picking up what's left of their homes after almost two dozen tornadoes ripped through the state, injuring at least 30 people.
The weather service sent crews Sunday to survey the hardest-hit areas in IL, which included Taylorville, 25 miles (40 kilometers) southeast of Springfield. He said at least 100 homes had major damage, including his own. Most were released within hours.
No deaths have been reported.
"It was one of those storms that just blew up", Christian County sheriff Bruce Kettelkamp told reporters on Saturday.
The National Weather Service sent out survey teams Sunday to analyze the damage, and said the exact number of tornadoes and the amount of damage wouldn't be determined until these are completed.
