Delhi Daredevils Change Name to Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals will sport a new logo and crest for the upcoming Indian Premier League season.

The GMR group, a property development company, successfully bid for the Delhi-based team for a sum of Dollars 84 million in January 2008. Delhi Capitals', formerly known as Delhi Daredevils, skipper Shreyas Iyer had a message to greet the fans initially. In the USA, there is an ice hockey team called Washington Capitals, which plays in the National Hockey League.

Changing the franchise name was always on the cards after JSW Sports - owners of football club Bengaluru FC - bought 50 per cent stake in the franchise earlier this year and wants to overhaul things completely. It's learnt that all the major decisions regarding the team are now being taken by Parth Jindal, the director at JSW Sports.

The franchise owners revealed the new name of the team in an event as they had built up a lot of hype for the same. While former Australian captain Ricky Ponting continues as the coach, Mohammad Kaif ha replaced Pravin Amre as his assistant.

Ahead of the start of the season, Delhi left Gautam Gambhir for IPL 2019. Besides releasing overseas players like Jason Roy, Glenn Maxwell and Liam Plunkett, they also let go of India pacer Mohammed Shami. Shikhar Dhawan will join the side for this edition.

Coming to the core squad, they have retained Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw, Chris Morris and also the Nepal Spinner.

They finished last in 2018, winning just five of their 14 games.
