On Sunday, the College Football Playoff committee made its decision regarding what four teams would make it to the Playoff on December 29. Oklahoma won out over Georgia due to their conference championship, so that's something. They have shown that they are willing to create justifications for things that have never been justifiable before, and unless the Big Ten gets its big stick out of the closet and starts swinging it, it's only going to get worse.
No. 2 Clemson (13-0) plays No. 3 Notre Dame (12-0) in the Cotton Bowl on the same day. The Tigers won the SEC West in 2017, so they were far from average, and the Bulldogs avenged their lone loss by defeating Auburn 28-7 later on in the SEC Championship Game.
Would it be Oklahoma, Georgia or Ohio State?
In the end, it went with a one-loss Oklahoma team over Georgia (11-2) and Ohio State (12-1).
The Buckeyes beat Northwestern Saturday night 45-24.
The debate leading up to championship Saturday was whether Oklahoma or Ohio State might take the fourth spot if Alabama beat Georgia.
"All they did was punch their ticket into the opportunity in the Playoff to win a National Championship, so now it's go-time", Kelly said.
Clemson didn't make the first playoff in 2014, but has been in every year since. Defending national champion Alabama has played in them all. The Blue Devils are making their sixth bowl appearance and their first ever trip to the Independence Bowl under head coach David Cutcliffe.
Notre Dame has its first undefeated regular season since 2012 when the Irish were 12-0 before losing 42-14 to Alabama in the BCS national championship game. Unbeaten UCF finished eighth in the final rankings, nowhere to be found in the committee's playoff discussion.
Bowl season in our state will have a decidedly southern feel.
However, if an offense could outscore Alabama's, it would be the Oklahoma offense. Anything can happen in College Football and both teams will have several weeks to prepare and get ready for each other.
