Like every mission to Mars, InSight would not have been possible without a high level of meticulously planned worldwide coordination involving hundreds of researchers and engineers.
Nasa is the only space agency to have made it, and is invested in these robotic missions as a way to prepare for the first Mars-bound human explorers in the 2030s.
After the landing, the scientists and engineers got to work.
The MarCOs have also supported scientific exploration at Mars, even though they do not carry any scientific equipment. They heard when the craft entered the Martian atmosphere.
InSight's primary instrument is a French-built seismometer, created to record the slightest vibrations from "marsquakes" and meteor impacts around the planet.
The MarCOs - interplanetary devices that connect communications between Earth and Mars - are also extremely cost-efficient, adding to their appeal.
The twin "Cubesats" tagging along for the flight to Mars represented the first deep-space use of a miniature satellite technology that space engineers see as a promising low-priced alternative to some larger, more complex vehicles.
The findings on Mars could help explain the type of conditions at these so-called exoplanets "and how they fit into the story that we're trying to figure out for how planets form", he said.
