World Antibiotic Awareness Week focuses on working together

The categories were established in the 2017 revision of the WHO's essential list of medicines to guide responsible antibiotic prescribing and use and to ensure that antibiotics are available when needed. In 49 countries, the Access category-which consists of first- and second-line drugs for common infections that should be available in all countries-represented more than 50% of antibiotic consumption, led by amoxicillin and amoxicillin-clavulanate.

It aims to draw attention to the role of effective use of antibiotics in preventing and containing antimicrobial resistance (AMR). These indicate that while some countries are probably overusing antibiotics, others may not even have sufficient access to the life-saving drugs.

She made this known in her message to mark the World Antibiotic Awareness Week, 12-18 November 2018 with the overall theme: "Think Twice. There's more work needed to educate individuals, families and communities about this problem-it really is time to take antibiotic resistance seriously", Mr Morris said. Therefore, when microbes develop drug resistance in animals, they can easily go on to affect humans, making it hard to treat diseases and infections.

"Findings from this report confirm the need to take urgent action, such as enforcing prescription-only policies, to reduce unnecessary use of antibiotics", Hill said.

During WAAW 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) and partners will reach the general public, governments, health care professionals, farmers, veterinarians, and a range of other stakeholders through interactive games, infographics, posters and social media assets to raise awareness of the need to act on antimicrobial resistance.

Dr Millar agrees and says that hand washing is a simple step that everyone can follow to help protect the use of antibiotics.

In Europe, which provided the most complete data for the report, the average antibiotic consumption was almost 18 DDD per 1,000 inhabitants per day. Unrestricted use of antibiotics has made them powerless against the very diseases they once fought. "Seek Advice" and "Misuse of Antibiotics puts us all at Risk".

Painting the numerous health risks associated with the high antibiotics resistance rate in the country, Rev. Awitty pointed out that "it is now becoming hard to treat minor infections like tuberculosis even with the combination of four different drugs".

Since 2016, the United Nations agency has been supporting data collection in 57 low- and middle-income countries in a bid to set up a standardised system for monitoring antibiotic use.

Never demand antibiotics if your health worker says you don't need them.

'Your doctor will tell you if antibiotics are the right treatment for you. The unregulated sales of antibiotic contribute to the overuse and misuse of these medicines, it added.

Students will learn how infections occur, how antibiotics are used to treat them and how the issue of anti-microbial resistance has emerged in response to the widespread use of antibiotics.
