American hardware giant Lowe's announced on Monday it would be closing 31 "underperforming stores" in Canada - nine of them in Quebec. As recently as August, Lowe's held a job fair for the store.
The list of other USA stores closing include locations in Alabama, California, Connecticut, Indiana, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania and Texas.
Lowe's also plans to close its regional support centres in Mississauga, Ont., and St. John's, N.L., as well as a truss plant in St. John's, N.L., and a block plant in Kamloops, B.C.
It was just over a year ago that Lowe's bought fellow Canadian home improvement retailer Rona.
Lowe's, which operates over 2,000 stores in North America, said the latest store closures would be complete by February.
The stores off Corunna Road in Flint Township and Court Street in Burton are among twenty underperforming locations across the US being shut down.
Last week, for instance, Lowe's hired Seemantini Godbole, Target's senior vice president of digital and marketing technology, as its new chief information officer.
"In this transformation, we're going to focus on retail fundamentals first, and concurrently we're going to modernize this company from. a digital and IT perspective and from a supply chain perspective, and we're going to create a truly great company", Ellison said.
