Man's death linked to consumption of squirrel brains

It is specified that the 61-year-old American was taken to a hospital in NY with complaints of confusion and the inability to move normally.

The 61-year-old man was taken to a hospital in Rochester, New York in 2015, after his ability to think, recognition and motor skills diminished.

The patient was diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob, which is a degenerative disease of the brain, which triggers the destruction of cells.

There have only ever been four confirmed cases of the much more serious vCJD. The squirrel meat was said to be contaminated with 'zombie-like proteins.' Polio-Like Rare Mysterious Disease Takes Over the USA; 38 Kids Affected By Now.

However, the medical personnel could not link the man's situation to anything, that until the family of the NY man admitted he was a hunter and had recently eaten squirrel brains.

It is unknown however if the hunter ate the squirrel's whole brain or meat contaminated with parts of squirrel brain, said Dr Tara Chen, a medical resident at Rochester Regional Health and lead author of the report.

The disease is always fatal, according to the National Institute of Health (NIH).

The neurodegenerative disease is one of the various diseases caused by prion, a kind of protein that exist in the brain naturally and are harmless.

There are three forms of CJD: one that is inherited, one that comes from exposure to infected tissue from the brain or nervous system, and one that is "sporadic" and does not appear to have a genetic or environmental cause.

We don't recommend the squirrel brains. There is no treatment or cure for the disease. Initial signs and symptoms typically include personality changes, anxiety, depression, memory loss, impaired thinking, blurred vision or blindness, insomnia, difficulty in speaking, difficulty in swallowing and, sudden, jerky movements or seizures.

The rare disease most often affects those around 60 years old.

The high number caused doctors to review all suspected cases at the hospital between 2013 and 2018.

However, CJD can be confirmed only with a test of brain tissue on autopsy at death.

Doctors at Rochester Regional Health wrote in the report that they were shocked when four suspected cases of CJD were presented between November 2017 and April 2018 because the disorder is so rare.
