Taylor Swift reportedly caused a spike in voter registrations both nationwide and in Tennessee when she broke her political silence Monday on Instagram, and the singer talked about politics again Tuesday at the American Music Awards.

The gongs brought her to an impressive career total of 23 AMAs, meaning she overtook Whitney Houston for the most wins by a female artist at the fan-voted show. "I love you guys".

She also picked up three other awards, for best female pop artist, best tour, and best pop album for "reputation", the biggest seller of 2017. The night opens with Taylor Swift making her first awards-show performance in almost three years, and tributes promise to provide memorable moments.

On tour, she performs the song with a drawn-out introduction, and Swift opted for that same arrangement on the AMA stage, even pausing for dramatic effect after the venomous lyric "if a man talks shit then I owe him nothing".

The singer added: "I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country". She voted against equal pay for women. As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I can not support Marsha Blackburn. "And those people all know who they are", Taylor said. I will be voting for Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives. Instead of a mark on her record, she took home the first award of the night: Favorite Artist - Rap/Hip-Hop.

Gladys Knight led a tribute to Aretha Franklin, who died of cancer in August at age 76.

"Please, please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values", she said.

XXXTentacion won for Favorite Album - Soul/R&B, after his death in June.

Boy band BTS became the first Korean group to win an American Music Award, taking the trophy for favourite social artists. At the Disco. The diva quota will be filled by headliners Jennifer Lopez, Carrie Underwood, Mariah Carey and the ever-provocative Cardi B.
