Police said Akira Furusho was found bleeding from his neck and lying on the floor Monday evening inside a tiger cage at Hirakawa Zoological Park in Kagoshima.
A zookeeper has died after being mauled by a rare white tiger at a zoo in the southwestern Japanese city of Kagoshima.
Police are investigating how the tiger - weighing 375 lbs and almost 6 feet long - managed to get into the enclosure at the same time as Mr Furusho.
The male tiger, named Riku, was sedated with a tranquilizer before first responders and police arrived, the BBC reported.
Mr Furusho was rushed to hospital but was later pronounced dead. "We had been looking forward to seeing white tigers, so it is too bad".
The Hirakawa Zoological Park opened for business on Tuesday, though the tiger enclosure was cordoned off.
There was no immediate word on the fate of the tiger responsible for the attack.
Officials said some of his body parts were eaten by the creatures in the savage attack, according to reports.
"Soorya, a tiger adopted by MLA Ashok Kheny, and its cubs Vanya and Jhansi Rani were resting inside".
