Tropical Storm Michael could be a Cat 1 by landfall

Once a tropical storm, Hurricane Michael is expected to strike the Florida Panhandle with Category 3 winds of 74-plus miles per hour. "Electricity and water will be unavailable for several days to weeks after the storm passes". It'll be breezy as well with winds sustained along the coast at 15 to 20 miles per hour.

The storm was centered about 80 kilometers off the western tip of Cuba, and about 220 kilometers east-northeast of Cozumel, Mexico.

In fact, the situation is already looking so dire for a midweek landfall on the Florida panhandle that Governor Rick Scott has preemptively declared states of emergency in numerous counties while suspending his own Senate campaign to warn residents of impending danger.

"The FL panhandle needs to be prepared for a direct hit with sustained hurricane force winds", Scott wrote on Twitter on Monday.

The combination of a risky storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline. Needless to say, Michael should be taken seriously.

Mandatory evacuation orders were issued on Monday for residents in Florida's Gulf and Bay counties, according to a statement from emergency officials.

The conditions presented by county officials Monday are subject to change as the storm continues to track closer to Florida's coast.

The governor also activated 1,250 National Guardsmen and said he would waive tolls for residents who were evacuating.

The Florida panhandle will be hardest hit, with parts of the Tallahassee and Panama City areas getting 12 inches of rainfall along with damaging winds. RAINFALL: Michael is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 3 to 7 inches over western Cuba and 2 to 4 inches over the Yucatan Peninsula and Belize through Tuesday. These chances could go up as we get greater confidence in the forecast.

The storm was expected to brush the westernmost province of Pinar Del Rio, where most of Cuba's famed cigar tobacco is grown, before continuing north to the United States.

An Air Force hurricane hunter airplane was sent into the storm to investigate, the hurricane centre said.

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, who is also the Democratic gubernatorial candidate in the November 6 election, said on Sunday he was cancelling his campaign events and returning to Tallahassee, the state capital, to focus on storm preparations.
