Air Niugini plane comes down in Micronesia lagoon

Everyone flying aboard an Air Niugini plane that crashed into the water early Friday in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) is believed to be safe, officials said.

Air Niugini Limited is the national airline of Papua New Guinea.

A plane has reportedly overshot the runway in Micronesia this morning.

Striking footage from the scene shows people being rescued in.

Emilio said all 36 passengers and 11 crew were safe and no serious injuries were reported, although they were taken to hospital for check-ups.

Jimmy Emilio, general manager of Chuuk Airport, said the plane landed about 150 yards short of the runway and the cause of the crash was unclear.

According to local news reports, the Boeing 737-800 was running according to schedule, stopping in Chuuk while on its way from Pohnpei, Micronesia to Port Moresby.

"Right now we don't really know what happened".

The airline said in a brief statement everybody aboard the Boeing 737 plane was able to safely evacuate, and the airline was making all efforts to ensure the ongoing safety of the passengers and meet their immediate needs.

People in small boats were seen rescuing people from the plane before it began to sink.

"Then I went back to my workplace and somebody told me, and I looked from the rooftop and the plane was starting to go underwater", he told Guardian Australia.

Papua New Guinea Accident Investigation Commission is now preparing a team to investigate the site of the accident. A cargo plane belonging to Air Niugini went off a runway at Madang Airport in 2013, but there were no casualties.
