He later secured his party's nomination in 2008, but lost to Democratic challenger Barack Obama in the general election. "We join with millions of Americans in mourning his loss, and extend our deepest condolences to Senator McCain's wife, Cindy, and his entire family".
Former President Barack and Michelle Obama also shared a statement Saturday sending their thoughts to McCain's family. "Thank you Senator McCain for your service to the nation". His family and friends will be in our prayers.
One notable exception: Senator John McCain.
Former Vice President Joe Biden released a statement saying "John McCain was many things - a proud graduate of the Naval Academy, a Senate colleague, a political opponent". We saw this country as a place where anything is possible - and citizenship as our patriotic obligation to ensure it forever remains that way.
McCain was born on August 29, 1936, at an American naval installation in the Panama Canal Zone - U.S. territory at the time - when his father was stationed there. Character. Courage. Integrity. Honor.
- In Congress, McCain was a pro-business conservative, free-market advocate and abortion foe but he voted against the Republican majority on several high-profile bills. His impact on America hasn't ended. Many Republicans believe that now means the election in 2020, given that this year's filing deadline has passed. John will be missed by Arizona.
"I never met him personally, but from afar respected the man for what he stood for and who he was", Edwards said. He was a public servant in the finest traditions of our country. But, to me, more than anything, John was a friend.
And so began a long, hard year for McCain and his family.
In running for president in 2008, McCain tried to succeed an unpopular fellow Republican in Bush, who was leaving office with the country mired in wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and stuck in a financial crisis.
Former Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman, a close friend, said Friday that "becoming John McCain's friend has been one of the great blessings of my life". John never took the easy path in life - and through sacrifice and suffering he inspired others to serve something greater than self.
"John McCain's legacy will continue for generations to come".
"That is the cause that binds us and is so much more powerful and worthy than the small differences that divide us", McCain said.
The Suns also sent out their condolences to McCain's family along with a genuine message on how the organization feels about the late senator's contributions to the nation. A titan in U.S. politics, he was respected as a war hero. "I am so lucky to have lived the adventure of loving this incredible man for 38 years", Cindy McCain wrote.
In New Hampshire that year, McCain defeated George W. Bush in an 18-point blowout, only to be pushed out of the race in SC.
House Speaker Paul Ryan said the McCain's death marks a "sad day for the United States", which has lost a "decorated war hero and statesman".
