Manchester United open talks with Chelsea for defender

L'Equipe are an extremely reliable source, and the fact that they are reporting this indicates the deal is close to completion.

Manchester United are desperately looking to sign defensive reinforcements before the transfer window shuts, and have opened talks with Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma, according to reports in L'Equipe.

Zouma spent last season on loan at Stoke City but failed to impress, as the Potters were consigned to relegation down to the Championship.

Set to don the red of Manchester United?

New Toffees boss Marco Silva has been backed by hefty transfer investment in his first season on Merseyside, with Zouma his sixth major signing of the summer. A number of defenders have been linked with the Premier League heavyweights as Jose Mourinho aims to solidify his backline for the upcoming season. In his desperation to sign a player, it now looks like the manager has turned his attention towards one of his former clubs, Chelsea.

Zouma was signed by Mourinho in 2014 when he was the manager of the London based outfit.

"Frenchman Zouma moves from Chelsea and joins Brazil midfielder Bernard, Barcelona trio Yerry Mina, Andre Gomes and Lucas Digne, Richarlison and Joao Virginia in arriving at Goodison in the summer transfer window".

The Mirror believe Everton submitted a deal sheet that could go allow them to sign the France global, despite the deal going beyond the 5pm deadline for Premier League clubs.
