Jose Mourinho: Man Utd boss 'not confident' of deadline day signing

United look set to go through the full transfer window without signing a centre-half, in spite of Mourinho's well-documented desire to add a high-profile central defender to his ranks.

Jose Mourinho has revealed that several key players will be missing in Friday's Premier League opener against Leicester City at Old Trafford.

When asked whether he expected to welcome a fresh additions to his United squad, Mourinho offered these comments: "The information I have is no".

United have endured a hard summer transfer window as they have tried and failed to sign a host of defensive targets, with Tottenham centre-back Toby Alderweireld and Leicester's Harry Maguire among the names on their wish-list.

Shearer said: It has been a long time since anyone won back-to-back titles but I think City will win the Premier League again because of Pep - he won't want their standards slipping.

The striker turned broadcast pundit believes Liverpool's mental edge over City following three victories against them last season - twice in the Champions League and once in the league - could be the difference if City do not runaway with the title in the manner they did last season. We go with everything we have in that first match.

"He said: "[Sergio] Romero, he had a surgery after his injury, [Antonio] Valencia, he was injured in pre-eason, Marcos Rojo, he was injured in the World Cup, [Diogo] Dalot had a surgery in Porto at the end of April and he is not yet ready. Sometimes its also hard to believe I won eight championships and three Premier Leagues, and I keep thinking the second position past year was one of my biggest achievements in England'.

Mourinho will have to decide whether or not to pick Jesse Lingard, Paul Pogba, Ashley Young and Marouane Fellaini against Leicester after they returned from post-World Cup break on Monday.

"Because it is very important how they feel and to understand how they think they can help or not help".

Marcus Rashford, Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku returned early and should be available.

"In Championship Manager you can just press a button", he stated. In football you need time to work and players on the pitch to work and we didn't have that until now.

"In pre-season it looked like I was saying something absolutely out of order, it looked like I was saying something insane", he added. I repeat: "pre-season hard when you don't have your players to work, as simple as that".
