Police in Cornwall say the woman made an "honest mistake" when she drove off in a vehicle, mistaking it for the one she had rented. Unfortunately, instead of her auto, she had gotten into another black vehicle.
Shortly afterwards, Cornwall police received a call from a man who left Walmart only to find his auto, a black Infiniti, missing from the parking lot.
A woman accidentally ended up swapping her rental auto for another man's vehicle in the parking lot of a Walmart in Cornwall, Ontario.
"Shortly thereafter she exited, walked over to the area where she had parked her vehicle, saw a shiny black vehicle, hopped in it and drove away", he said.
"In conversation with the manager of that establishment it came out that he was the owner of a black Infiniti that was recently stolen", MacKay said.
According to Cornwall police, after renting the auto, the woman drove to a local Walmart where she did some grocery shopping. Police stressed: "Never leave a key fob in a vehicle unless it's being driven". When they reached the Walmart parking lot, the rental vehicle was still sitting in the same spot where it had been parked two weeks before, police noted.
In the end - It was the manager at the Enterprise who was able to crack the case. Police say she caused confusion when she tried to drop of an Infiniti - not the Nissan she originally rented.
"She was upset because the ashtray was dirty, there were papers in the glove box, and there were golf clubs in the back". Since the rental auto used the same system she was none the wiser to the mixup and drove off on her merry way.
"The manager was quite puzzled, as she's turning in keys to an Infiniti, when she rented a Nissan in the first place", MacRae said.
The manager, who was obviously confused, examined the Infiniti keys, noting that they weren't the keys to the vehicle the woman had actually rented. They even tried to explain that the model she was trying to return wasn't on file but she apparently did not want to hear it.
There were no official charges so this story has a happy ending.
He had remembered the owner of the Infiniti, who also went to Enterprise to rent a auto, thinking his vehicle was in fact stolen.
Eventually they drove over to the Wal Mart where they found the rental vehicle and called police.
