Run by chef Massimo Bottura, the restaurant in Modena, Italy pipped last year's victor, New York's "Eleven Madison Park," in the World's 50 Best Restaurants awards, after first taking the honour in 2016.
But above everything else, and as an introduction, William Drew, group editor of World's 50 Best Restaurants insisted on saying goodbye to American food icon and television host Anthony Bourdain, who died tragically earlier this month. The restaurant, farm, and inn in Healdsburg, Calif.is run by married couple Katina and Kyle Connaughton. Tuesday's ceremony also handed out individual chef awards. However, if you want to eat at this restaurant, you better do it soon as chef Gaggan Anand has pledged to close it down in 2020 after 10 years of service. Peru's Gaston Acurio won the Diner's Club Lifetime Achievement Award.
Restaurant magazine launched the awards in 2002 and they are now as coveted by restaurants as Michelin stars, although the methodology used to select the best restaurants has faced criticism, especially from several French chefs who say it is unclear.
Massimo Bottura accepted the award for the three-Michelin-star restaurant in Modena, Italy, saying, "This is awesome". The event has been held before in London, New York and Melbourne. Crenn was awarded the "Best Female Chef" title in 2016, although she was left off the list that year as well.
In her acceptance speech for Best Female Chef, Smyth said she doesn't know why there aren't more women in the industry, but that it is necessary to remove barriers to "make a more human workplace for both men and women". This year, all of the top three restaurants were European.
Last year's victor, Eleven Madison Park in NY, slipped to number four, but goodies like a sturgeon and caviar cheesecake kept it rated the best restaurant in North America. It is the only restaurant from the Republic on the list.
