For the start of her trip to visit immigrant children at the US border, the first lady wore a $39 jacket from Zara with the words "I REALLY DON'T CARE, DO U?" written graffiti-style on the back. The high in the District on Friday, the first day of summer, was 86 degrees.
Melania Trump's communications director, Stephanie Grisham, said in a statement, "It's a jacket".
But the jacket the US first lady wore for Thursday's trip conveyed a different message.
So maybe this was a way of telling her husband: "I really don't care" about how much you want to crack down on the borders; this isn't fair to children. "Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!"
Ahead of a visit with victims of Hurricane Harvey past year, photos of the first lady heading to the airport in stiletto heels drew ire on social media.
Melania broke her silence on the detentions which have seen immigrant children separated from their families earlier this week.
Ms Trump thanked staff for what she called the "heroic work" they "do for these children".
Mrs Trump's husband credited her and his daughter Ivanka for persuading him to end the separation of children from parents who had entered the USA illegally. "She was concerned about it", Grisham said.
Misreading the mood. Melania Trump, in a $70,000 Dolce & Gabbana jacket, attending an economic summit in Italy.
The casual, off-the-rack jacket is unlike most of the formal, designer clothing that Trump is often spotted wearing. "The images struck her, as a mother, as a human being". It's more like a dog whistle for Trump's anti-immigrant supporters: "I'm publicly supporting immigrants, but you really know I don't care". "I am speechless", he wrote.
"She believes we need to be a country that follows all laws but also a country that governs with heart".
"I like to dream that Melania chooses her ensembles just to piss off liberals", reads one representative tweet following the stiletto backlash. She wanted to see as close to what she had been seeing on TV.
It is, however, unusual for Melania Trump to wear low-cost clothes when on public business.
