USA, Canada and Mexico to host 2026 FIFA World Cup

Another three are cities that will have expansion teams coming into MLS. One-by-one, cities from coast-to-coast started confirming their participation in the fledgling league, with excitement rising after every announcement.

U.S. soccer president Carlos Corderio said after his bid's success on Wednesday: "It's a bit emotional for us today". Canada and Mexico would then host ten games each.

That could mean more than 220,000 spectators on Day 1, given the bid group's stadium capacity estimates include expanding BMO Field to 45,500.

Canada and the United States did not qualify for the tournament.

This will be the first time that Canada will host the tournament.

"Thank you for entrusting us with the privilege of hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2026", Carlos Cordiero, the president of US Soccer told the delegates from more than 200 member nations following the vote. Victor Montagliani, the Canadian who leads CONCACAF, wants them to take three of the seven guaranteed qualification slots reserved for the region as host.

Canada, along with the United States and Mexico, is part of the United Bid, trying to bring the World Cup back to North America for the first time since 1994. Cordeiro defended that split, calling it "the most optimal mix of cities and matches".

What surface will the tournament be played on?

Peter Montopoli, the general secretary of the Canadian Soccer Association and Canada's bid director, said it will be 100 per cent natural grass, meaning temporary surfaces will have to be installed in stadiums with artificial turf.

The Olympic Stadium, as well as 10 of the other stadiums being considered across North America, have artificial surfaces. But while Vancouver was removed from the bid book as a venue, Victoria remained in as a possible training-camp site.

Less than two month's before Canada was thrust onto the world stage as a future host of the largest single-sport event on the planet, a significant step was made to help ensure that the team that would ultimately represent the Maple Leaf on opening day doesn't fail spectacularly with the world watching.

How will the tournament work?

The new format will increase the amount of games at the tournament from 64 to 80. There will be no reduction in rest days. Achilles' oracular credentials rest on his strong performance during the Confederation's Cup that Russian Federation held last summer as a World Cup trial-run, in which he reportedly correctly predicted three out of four games, including the final.

A mix of dorms, residences and first-class hotels would be required for the pre-World Cup training venues, along with several natural grass fields that are nearby, and groomed to the highest worldwide standards.
