North American trio beats Morocco to host 2026 World Cup

Like Canada, Japan had previously qualified for only one World Cup.

The North American nations' pitch outscored Morocco on the official evaluation, which laid the groundwork for a return to the continent for the first time since U.S. hosted alone in 1994.

"Each of the United Bid's 23 proposed stadiums are fully built, occupied, and operational, ensuring long-term use following the 2026 World Cup".

The three countries presented a "United Bid" that promised to take football to a combined 500million people in North America and were awarded 134 votes to Morocco's 65.

Mexico has twice hosted the World Cup, in 1970 and 1986.

Al Jazeera's Gabriel Elizondo, reporting from NY, said: "While the official name of the bid is United 2026, the three potential host nations are right now anything but united".

Both candidates made their final pitches to European FIFA members today and despite an impassioned plea by France to vote for its historic and cultural ally in Morocco, sources close to UEFA predicted most of their 54 members would go the other way.

Of the 80 games, 10 matches will be held in Canada, 10 in Mexico and 60 in the USA with the final played at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, home to the NFL's New York Giants and New York Jets.

2026 ushers in the start of the 48-team World Cup, which gives teams from North America an enhanced opportunity of qualifying for the competition. Despite Africa appearing to act as a unified bloc in the build-up to the election, 11 African nations wound up voting for the United Bid, according to the results published by Federation Internationale de Football Association.

The 2026 edition will be the second World Cup hosted on United States soil, and the first one in 1994 still holds the record for the most tickets sold and the most revenue ever generated in addition to leading to the launch of Major League Soccer just two years later.

"Both bids were of a very high quality and we welcome the fact that the bidding process was both open and transparent".

The key number is 104 but there is also the freakish and unprecedented scenario where both bids get rejected.
