Full text: The statement signed by Trump and Kim

President Trump committed to provide security guarantees to the DPRK, and Chairman Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

The stagecraft was highly choreographed, but the results of the talks are still unknown: Both mercurial men entered the summit claiming to support "denuclearization of the Korean peninsula", but neither has defined what that means, or what it will take to get there.

Lasting peace has obvious benefits for China, especially in bolstering the development of its rust-belt and landlocked northeast which borders North Korea and would suffer in the even of conflict.

Mr Trump faced some tough questions, including one about Warmbier, the United States college student from OH who was arrested and imprisoned in North Korea for 17 months before being returned home in a coma.

Speaking to Cuomo, Rodman got emotional as he spoke of his efforts of trying to bring bitter rivals North Korea and the United States together.

Kim spent the day out of view, but was reportedly going on an evening tour of attractions on the city's waterfront, a source familiar with the plan told Reuters.

"We sat down for lunch", Rodman said of a face-to-face meeting with Kim five years ago.

Washington is eager to see if the North's pledges were "sincere", Pompeo said, adding: "The US has been fooled before".

Speaking as they tucked in, Mr Trump said: "We have a very interesting meeting in particular tomorrow, and I think things can work out very nicely".

Kim said he will "cooperate with President Trump to resolve the challenges ahead" and to overcome the skepticism and speculations about their summit.

But reflecting on the meeting Trump appeared to brush off for the most part North Korea's dismal record regarding human rights, saying it was only discussed "relatively briefly" compared to the primary goal of convincing Kim to dismantle his nuclear program. Recent financial disclosures by his daughter and son-in-law, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, who also act as senior White House advisers, detailed extensive property holdings of their own (paywall). "We never knew much about the North Korean regime and it's hard to distinguish what's true and what's false".

The two clasped hands for a long while as they posed for photos in front of a row of US and North Korean flags.

Even Kim recognised how weird a meeting it was; a meeting of equals between the leader of an impoverished rogue nation and the president of the most powerful country in the world.

Details were not shared about how the discussions have progressed so far and Trump and Kim have yet to meet face-to-face.

"I also think I'll know if it's going to happen fast - it may not, but I'll know pretty quickly whether or not in my opinion something positive will happen".

The media spotted Trump and Kim approaching the limousine, adorned with an American flag.

"I may stand before you in six months and say, 'Hey, I was wrong.' ..."

"I'm here. I haven't slept in 25 hours but I thought it was appropriate to do because we've been negotiating for literally around the clock with them and with us, and with John and with Mike and a whole team of very talented people."
