On Friday, Wytheville is holding their annual Relay for Life at Withers Park on 200 E Withers Road.
Nationally, there are 415 events with 110,000 participants who have collectively raised more than $500 million for the Canadian Cancer Society. This year, Douglas County raised $147,650.80, surpassing the goal of $135,000.
As of June 1, the 2018 Relay will bring together 28 separate teams who have reached or surpassed the qualifying fundraising threshold.
"One of the coolest things.is the Luminaria exchange, where (Relay) events from different states, different parts of the nation, (send) bags to the other side of the country.to represent that those folks are here", she continued.
Relay for Life teams came out strong on Friday night, decorating the turf with illuminated paper bags and torches to remember their loved ones.
This was Phoebe's second time participating in Relay for Life. This year's relay theme is "There's No Place Like Hope". "One thing I've learned is that you may not know the person you are walking next to on the track, but you share the same connection in some abstract way, and that's a handsome thing to share together". The team that raises the most money per person and the person who raises the most money will be recognized during a plaque presentation at the end of the evening, when everything is tallied up.

"It's an honour to be the face of Relay and I'm happy to help others". All the proceeds from fundraising monies go straight to the American Cancer Society to help those battling the disease.
