Highest surge in syphilis for almost 70 years 'due to government cuts'

'There is a small decline in chlamydia diagnoses, but this isn't good news as there's also been an 8 percent decline in testing for chlamydia.

Chlamydia testing has fallen 8% in the past year, there's a strain of drug resistant super-gonorrhea going around, and according to new data from Public Health England, syphilis is well and truly back with a vengeance.

Those aged between 25 and 34-years-old accounted for most cases - a total of 33%.

Beyond dating apps and unsafe sex, campaigners also cite government cuts to sexual health services as another factor behind the rise.

A report published by Public Health England (PHE) found that there was a 20% increase in syphilis in the UK.

Public Health England said this was concerning because the infection was increasingly...

"Consistent and correct condom use with new and casual partners is the best defence against STIs, and if you are at risk, regular check-ups are essential to enable early diagnosis and treatment".

In March 2018, a man was diagnosed with the first case of "super gonorrhea" in the United States, concerning health officials that current rise in gonorrhea could potentially lead to more cases like this. She explains that there is a high risk of infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease and danger to the unborn babies.

Meanwhile, a significant fall in rates of genital warts - a 90% decrease on 2009 - reflects the widespread take-up of the Human Papilloma Virus vaccine in girls aged 12-13.

'Worryingly however, we are seeing an increase in the number of clinics that are being closed and patients are finding it increasingly hard to access care. The bad news is that the health impact of these infections can be devastating.

'There's no clear plan for tackling consistently high rates of STIs.

Both STIs have increased by more than 20% in the past year, and cases of syphilis are at their highest level for almost 70 years, new figures show.

Gavin discovered he had the STI around one year after he became infected, by which point it had reached its secondary stage.

According to the PHE report, the sharp increases in bacterial STIs among gay men may be due in part to "an increase in the number of condomless, anal intercourse partners as a result of behaviours such as HIV seroadaptive behaviours, group sex facilitated by geosocial networking applications, and 'chemsex'".

He added: 'You've got loads of support for HIV; with syphilis, it's not discussed at all'.
