Yosemite park rangers and search and rescue personnel responded at the scene, but the climbers didn't survive the fall.

Two rock climbers died after falling from the El Capitan granite cliff in Yosemite National Park on Saturday, according to reports.

The two fell about 8:15 a.m. while climbing the Freeblast route on the sheer granite rock, according to a statement from the National Park Service.

They were identified as Jason Wells, 46, from Colorado and Tim Klien, 42, from California. When they arrived at the site, they discovered the two climbers had died.

It was the second fatal incident in Yosemite National Park in a little over a week.

Hans Florine, Honnold's partner in a previous record-setting climb in 2012, watched from a wheelchair after being injured in a May 4 fall from the Nose. He said Klein was known for his speed and knowledge of El Capitan.

Richards is not sure if the climbers were "hands free" or using ropes.
