Tom Brady not present for start of Patriots' voluntary OTAs

So, what's Tom Brady doing that's so important that he made a decision to skip the Patriots first organized team activity (OTAs) on Monday?

Quarterback Tom Brady and tight end Rob Gronkowski - first-team All-Pros in 2017 and arguably the best players in the league at their respective positions - have yet to report to Gillette Stadium for offseason workouts.

Tom Brady will reportedly miss the start of Patriots' OTAs.

Tom Brady's future is surprisingly up in the air right now for a starting quarterback coming off of another Super Bowl appearance, with rumors circulating that he was considering retirement and ongoing reports of tension between Brady and Bill Belichick. They're theoretically voluntary, a word which has very little meaning in football culture: if you voluntarily miss a workout, you're letting your whole team down, fella.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport says Brady is unlikely to attend OTAs - but the question remains. with reported strife in the organization, will Brady report for mandatory mini-camp in June? He has skipped all of the team's offseason program so far this season. When asked about whether he felt appreciated in Foxboro Brady "pleaded the 5th". They're not getting younger, so I need to take time so I can be available to them, too.

Brian Hoyer/Danny Etling - The No. 2/3 quarterbacks will get all the work in OTAs, which is valuable time to improve their craft in a teaching-based setting.

This one's easy. OTAs are Offseason Team Activities, where the team begins getting in shape for the upcoming season. Both chose to skip Phases 1 and 2 of the program, which focus mostly on conditioning and technique, and neither has said or done anything to suggest he'll be back on the practice field Monday. He'll be fine. He's going to play about two more years and he might not play nice with the Patriots during all the offseason stuff over that stretch. No pads or contact are allowed during OTAs but you get full practice type environment where the offense faces the defense in 7 on 7 and 11 on 11 drills. If this is what makes the organization great then when it doesn't happen it's decidedly not great. Brady is a tone-setting leader, but that leadership has limited impact when he isn't in the building. It's possible the future hall of famer decides to show at some point during OTAs which will be good for everybody and hopefully mitigate some of the damage his uncharacteristic absence has already done.
