The Virginia Tech women's tennis, women's golf, women's track and field, and baseball teams received Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for top scores in the classroom, as announced by the NCAA on Wednesday.
The NCAA did not recognize N.C. State for being among the top 10 percent, and its sports teams' scores have not been released. It accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation each term to provide a clear measure of each team's academic performance.
The program recorded its mark (a ideal rate of 1,000) over the course of the 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 school years.
"I applaud every program earning a Public Recognition Award this year for their commitment to going above and beyond to prepare students for life after college through academic achievement", NCAA President Mark Emmert said.
Other Zag programs honored: baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's cross country, women's cross country, men's golf, men's soccer, women's tennis, men's track and women's track (indoor and outdoor track are combined).
Three University of Arkansas intercollegiate athletic programs earned public recognition awards for their exemplary academic performance by the NCAA on Wednesday.
The men's and women's fencing (2014), women's volleyball (2014) and wrestling (2014, 2016-18) programs have captured NCAA Championships during the past four years. "Our Student-Athlete Success Program continues its outstanding work with all 24 of our sports and I want to thank them for their tireless dedication to our student-athletes".
The NCAA's April is created to track the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship at a particular institution. Of the teams recognized, 457 competed in men's or mixed sports, and 827 competed in women's sports.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester or quarter by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete.
Critics point out that judging academic success and paying hefty April bonuses to administrators and coaches for keeping athletes eligible doesn't accurately measure the quality of their academic experience and can lead to other problems.
The University of Arkansas has earned a public recognition award in 12 of the 13 years since the program was initiated.
A school record 26 teams and 520 Nittany Lion student-athletes earned at least a 3.0 grade-point average during the 2017 fall semester, including a record 253 who earned Dean's List recognition for having a 3.5 GPA.
Among those teams were UNC's basketball team, which received a ideal 1,000 April score, and Duke's football team.
