Williams helps Pirates shut out struggling Sox

Williams scattered six hits and struck out six without a walk in seven innings and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the White Sox 7-0 Tuesday night. Sean Rodriguez and Bell also had run-scoring hits in the second.

The White Sox are 20-41 in their last 61 Wednesday games and 15-38 in their last 53 during game two of a series.

Pittsburgh right-hander Jameson Taillon (2-3, 4.08 ERA) is scheduled to face White Sox left-hander Hector Santiago (0-1, 5.60 ERA).

The Pirates characterized Marte's departure as right side discomfort.

Santiago was pegged to make his third start, 12th appearance, when Chicago chose to push Carson Fulmer's start back to Friday against Texas at home to give him a full week off after he has struggled.

White Sox: Second baseman Yoan Moncada (left hamstring tightness) was activated from the disabled list and went 1 for 4. He was 1-for-4.

Pittsburgh's top hitter this year is Starling Marte, who had 48 hits, 29 runs, six homers and 19 RBI coming into this set. Marte appeared to tweak something in his torso while scoring on Josh Bell's double in the first inning, while Cervelli was hit on the inside of his right forearm by a Reynaldo López pitch in the third. "So little different kind of scenario there. Probably felt too good".

For Taillon, the laceration on his finger is just his latest hiccup.

"I thought we did our homework well last time", he said. The Cubs and Cardinals are a game back. Trevor Williams started for the Pirates, and did not allow a run over seven innings.
