In return from bereavement, A's player hits homer for mom

Piscotty patted his heart with his right hand in tribute to Gretchen Piscotty, who died May 6 after battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

Piscotty had been away from the team following the death of his mother. Her funeral services were held Monday in Livermore.

It's been an emotional time for Oakland Athletics outfielder Stephen Piscotty.

It was quite a night for the A's Stephen Piscotty. In his first game after Gretchen's death last Wednesday, Piscotty received a standing ovation from the Oakland crowd, which lasted for almost a minute prior to his at-bat. "I'm going to keep that with me".

Continuing what has been a solid start to the season, Mengden kept a unsafe Red Sox lineup in check as he allowed just two runs, one earned, on eight hits with no walks and three strikeouts over six innings of work.

Daniel Mengden (3-4) pitched six solid innings for Oakland, scattering eight hits and holding Boston to two runs - one earned - and struck out three. "It felt so good, and coming around third I was immediately thinking of my mom", said Piscotty.

Mengden improved to 3-4 on the season, lowering his ERA to 3.75.
