The news that Glover would get his own Star Wars spinoff, based on Lando Calrissian, who he plays in the Solo film, filled the internet with excitement. The French magazine Premiere recently interviewed Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy at the Cannes Film Festival. "'We would love to tell a story about Lando Calrissian one day, but this is not news'".
It's led to a lot of people wishing Solo was instead Lando: A Star Wars Story, and fans of the Cloud City chief may well have their wish granted. The yet-to-be-titled Episode IX is slated for a 2019 release but beyond that it's just a rough sketch rather than a solid outline.
"We think that the next spin-off will be dedicated to Lando Calrissian", Premiere quoted Kennedy as saying. "When I heard they were making these, I told my agent, 'if they're making anything with Lando in it, I have to be Lando, '" he said over the weekend during a Solo press day.
Depending on your (certain point of view) next could mean a great many things.
How much do you trust Kathleen Kennedy's pronouncements about the future of Star Wars? Even Premiere and ComicBook both note the long-gestating chatter around an Obi-Wan film.
Rejoice, fans: Lando: A Star Wars Story is probably happening
When that might happen, though, is unknown.
For some reason, Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm are keeping their Sabacc cards to their chest on Kenobi, but for Lando Calrissian, they neglect in using their poker face, their poker face - muh muh muh muh.
Ever since Donald Glover's casting was announced for Solo, my first thought was, But what about a Lando movie? Well, it's not impossible that Lando's film could be in 2020, with Obi-Wan's standalone following in 2021, as ComicBook also acknowledges.
So what sort of schedule can we expect if Lando is suddenly next in the pipeline? More Donald Glover makes the galaxy a better place for us all.
