The news comes a month after the first season, based on the classic 1960s series, was released on Friday 13th April 2018.
Netflix has yet to confirm the future of Altered Carbon, its other major new sci-fi release in 2018, despite the series being released nearly two months before Lost in Space. The original series starred Guy Williams, June Lockhart, Mark Goddard, Marta Kristen, Bill Mumy, Angela Cartwright, and Jonathan Harris.
The Netflix original series is produced by Legendary Television. The two executive produce with showrunner Zack Estrin, Synthesis Entertainment's Kevin Burns and Jon Jashni with Applebox's Neil Marshall and Marc Helwig. Season One, which included 10 episodes, follows the Robinson family on their journey from Earth to Alpha Centauri.
While the second season has only now been formally greenlit, the creators have apparently been working on it for a while now - both decisions which are understandable given the amount of money Netflix has pumped into the series.
But when the new colonists find themselves abruptly torn off course en route to their new home they must forge new alliances and work together to survive in a risky alien environment, light-years from their original destination.
The Robinson family will continue to find themselves lost in intergalactic adventures.
Numerous elements from the original show have been reimagined, not least of which being the role of Mr. Smith going to Parker Posey, who plays the delightfully wicked villain.
