Jaitley underwent a successful kidney transplant surgery at the AIIMS this morning. "Both the donor and the recipient are stable and recovering well", a senior AIIMS told PTI. The National Democratic Alliance is now consolidating its economic reforms and social welfare schemes in its previous year in office before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. During the period, the minister actively participated in public discourse on policy matters, including on the terms of reference for the 15th Finance Commission, on which some south Indian states have raised some concerns. According to sources, nephrologist Dr Sandeep Guleria of Apollo Hospital - the brother of AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria, a family friend - was part of the team performing the transplant.
Jaitley had confirmed his illness in a tweet on April 6 and said, "I am being treated for kidney-related problems & certain infections that I have contracted", he had tweeted.
Jaitley has been unwell for a while and was undergoing treatment at the AIIMS.
"The doctors will keep him under observation before deciding the further course of action", said a member of Jaitley's staff. Doctors from AIIMS say the minister could take at least six to eight weeks for full recovery. External affairs minister Swaraj had undergone a similar surgery in December 2016. In 2014 he had a gastric bypass operation to keep his diabetes in check.
Ill-health had led to the minister cancelling his official trips to London and Washington last month.
