Woolworths supermarkets hit by IT outage

Customers began to take to social media at quarter past 4pm to report that they were stuck in lines or told to leave the store while the issue is resolved.

Supermarket giant Woolworths has suffered an IT outage this afternoon which affected registers at its stores nationwide.

Social media posts indicate stores impacted locally include Walkerston and Caneland Central.

Others have been told to leave the stores.

The outage has also shut down entire stores.

As of 4:50pm AEST, a Woolworths spokesperson has confirmed that services have returned to normal.

"Shoppers have been told to leave groceries in baskets in the aisle", one customer wrote on Twitter. Staff said every register in every store nation wide has shut down. "We apologise for the inconvenience this caused our customers".

Woolworths stores across the country have had to shut down registers and are unable to make sales.

Shoppers have taken to Facebook across Australia to complain about the outage, accusing the supermarket chain of "ruining dinner plans".

The ABC reached out to Woolworths for comment.
