Surprisingly, his role in V-Wars has Somerhalder hanging up his fangs to assume the role of the very human Dr. Luther Swann, who is introduced to the horrific world of vampires when a mysterious disease transforms his best friend, Michael Fayne, into a murderous predator who feeds on other humans. Soon, more and more people are transformed, creating a divide in society: humans versus vampires. Unfortunately for him, Michael rises to power as an underground leader of the vampires, putting Swann in a hard spot. Netflix has ordered 10 hourlong episodes of V-Wars, based on Jonathan Maberry's bestselling book, from IDW Entertainment and High Park Entertainment. V-Wars will explore the complicated rivalry between Luther and Michael as the series progress. 1-800-Missing creators William Laurin and Glenn Davis will serve as showrunners. Eric Birnberg and Thomas Walden are executive producing for High Park Entertainment, while David Ozer and Ted Adams will serve in that capacity for IDW Entertainment. Its fantasy series Wynonna Earp returns for a third season later this year on SYFY and Space, and its adaptation of the horror comic series Locke & Key is still searching for a streaming home.
Not only will Somerhalder lead the whole shebang as Dr. Swann, he'll also act as a director on the first season of V-Wars (though it's unclear how many episodes he'll helm).
Ian Somerhalder is putting his fangs back on. He now has a pod deal with TVD producers Warner Bros. The genre drama joins a roster of Marvel fare including the recently renewed Jessica Jones and gives the streamer a series vampire drama as The CW is prepping the final season of Vampire Diaries spinoff The Originals, while working on yet another offshoot from the franchise.
Currently Somerhalder and his wife, actress Nikki Reed have a pod deal with Warner Bros TV to produce new content for the network under their production company Rare Bird Productions. He is repped by ICM Partners, Untitled Entertainment and Todd Rubenstein of Morris Yorn.
