Arab League summit kicks off with focus on Jerusalem conflict, Syrian crisis

A source from the Arab League told Asharq Al-Awsat that the kings, presidents and leaders of 17 countries will attend the summit.

"The Arab League summit harshly condemns the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime against the Syrian people", the statement said as quoted by Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Jubeir during the summit in the city of Dhahran that focused on the situation in Syria after the Western strike.

On Dec. 6, 2017, Trump announced his official recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital and instructed the relocation of the USA embassy from Tel Aviv to the disputed holy city, which promptly triggered fury and condemnation throughout the Arab world.

The Qatari delegation will be headed by Doha's permanent representative to the Arab League, Saif bin Muqaddam al-Buainain, the state news agency said without elaborating. He commended the US, UK and France for Saturday's attack, saying when a ruthless regime commits war crimes, the worldwide community has the right to take action and save innocent civilians.

AL Secretary General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit noted that the crises gripping the Middle East will further deteriorate and weaken the entire region if not harnessed. "The crisis in Syria can only be resolved through a political solution", he added.

HM King Hamad stressed that "cooperation among brothers" is the best means to preserve Arab countries' capabilities, and ensure their security and stability in order to be able to repel repeated foreign interference in their domestic affairs.

Saudi Arabia and its Arab and non-Arab allies believe that Lebanon and Iraq are Iran's backyard and their sovereignty is violated by the Islamic Republic.
