The Colombian's 1:13.160 lap put the No. 6 Acura ARX-05 on top of the time sheets in the 45-minute session that saw two red flags for accidents. The result marked the first pole position for Acura Team Penske in the DPi era, and Montoya's first at Long Beach. "I'm really looking forward to the race tomorrow, it should be a lot of fun".
Eric Curran brushed the wall twice in the No. 31 Action Express Racing Cadillac DPi-V.R, with the second incident leaving the car's rear deck on track and bringing out a red.
Joao Barbosa's second AXR Cadillac will start fifth ahead of Renger Van der Zande in the similar vehicle of Wayne Taylor Racing.
Third in class was the sister auto, the #911 Porsche 911 RSR, piloted by Patrick Pilet who clocked in a 1:17.263 to put that vehicle on the inside of the second row.
Next up came Patrick Pilet in the second Porsche, a further 0.25sec behind, while the Corvette C7.Rs of Jan Magnussen and Oliver Gavin claimed fourth and fifth. After topping the charts in Practice No. 2, Montoya turned in a lap of 72.922 seconds (97.156 mph) to win the pole for Saturday's BUBBA Burger Sports Car Grand Prix at Long Beach.
