This woman has loved me, and we've loved each other through so many things, and I'm not flawless, and you're not gonna tell me otherwise.' So many of us do what our parents ask of us, or tell us to do, and though it comes from a good place, it's not always the right thing for us, because it's our life.
Although season two of This Is Us is at an end, there are still plenty of stories to be told.
There was no sophomore jinx for "This Is Us", which capped a second season punctuated by its post-Super Bowl episode with a strong, emotional finale that simultaneously managed to look back while cleverly planting the seeds for what lies ahead. "And you're so lovely and Dad is older and grayer, but still Dad", Kate admits to her mom over the phone. He's on a flight headed to Vietnam with an old photograph of Jack and his brother, Nicky, in Army fatigues during the Vietnam War (the same photo we saw in the episode, "Brothers"). Why are you going to Vietnam, Kevin? We also got a glimpse of the future for our happy newlyweds, which apparently involves good time, grand gesture Toby succumbing to crippling depression while Kate tries to take care of him. We imagine this will not be all smooth sailing, but we can't wait to see how it plays out. Toby was lying in bed looking miserable as Kate told him his doctors wanted to check his medications again. I just thought that it would be a nice little touch, and something that would be for me that Kate would do, and keep him close to her heart. Does this spell bad things for Kate and Toby's future? "She would never hurt me!"
In her dream, it's Jack and Rebecca's 40th wedding anniversary, and friends and loved ones have gathered together at the family cabin to stand witness to the couple's vow renewal ceremony. God only knows what's in store for the newlyweds. Meanwhile, Deja was bashing the windshield of Randall's beloved Mercedes with a baseball bat, but that's a problem for another day. So Rebecca, could be having many different emotions and wishing Jack was there to experience the moment with her. They fear the worst. Beth's cousin, Zoe, is photographing the wedding.
The series has also taken what easily could have been a exhausted subplot, involving Randall's foster child Deja (Lyric Ross), and in the last few episodes broadened that into something more resonant than clichéd, while presenting Randall with a parenting challenge that, as is so often true on the show, ties into his past while simultaneously hinting at his future. "Me neither", responds Randall.
Beth: She'll make Tess resent us and end up on the pole.
Overall, tonight was a moment of catharsis for Kate. It's heartbreaking because as much as things happen for a reason, it's really hard to contend with someone that you really love is gone, especially when you have a relationship like Kate and Jack did. At one point, she breaks away from the family and all the pre-wedding activities and retreats to a spot in the woods she frequented with Jack with an urn of his ashes under her arm. During the vow renewals, Jack is about as flawless as you could imagine, telling his wife just how lucky he is to have her by his side as partners in Big Three Homes, the construction company he once dreamed of opening. "I've been holding onto that feeling for a really long time now, that feeling of you next to me".
"Some of you may not know this, but for the 22 years that I worked for Lundy Builders, my wife put a folded note packed into my briefcase every day. But Dad, I'm getting married today - and I've got to make room for Toby, so I've got to let go a little now".
Beth: She might kill us both in our sleep. Rebecca and Kate shared a sweet moment where Kate admitted to her mother that she just wanted to be like her. Thanks to fantasy sequences, such rare interactions can occur.
