While the latter will remain in place, the Majors Battle Pass will be replaced with a brand new system, costing $3.99 a month.
Valve has announced that a new subscription service called "Dota Plus" has been created for Dota 2, a monthly subscription that evolves the Battle Pass and provides players with a hero leveling system and other features.
Dota Plus is available for $3.99 a month, though discounts are also available for players who want to go ahead and subscribe for either six months or a year.
In an announcement this afternoon, Valve said that the new service "is an evolution of the Battle Pass", which previously came in two forms - one for the majors, and one for The International. Valve is selling Dota Plus as a replacement for all this with some added bonus. And now players, as well the hero played, will be earning experience for each match played. For the monthly price of $3.99 United States dollars you can also track in-game progress, select a challenge before the game (with these challenges refreshed every two weeks), and make use of the Hero Chat Wheel, allowing you to choose phrases for your hero to say.
Typically, Dota 2 has monetized through the sale of optional cosmetic skins, announcer voices, or new characters so the addition of an optional paid subscription to the longtime free-to-play game is a notable change. Players will be granted access to Plus-exclusive items that can be bought using shards and select legacy item sets for heroes.
That is all standard fare of a subscription within a free to play game, but where things get unusual are with the addition of "Plus Assistant". And in case you are confused about which hero to pick, Plus Assistant will suggest that as well. You can also gift subscriptions to friends. There is a Post-Game Analytics feature as well that will "compare your performance for a given metric over the course of the game to what the average performance is at a given skill bracket". Subscribers will also have free access to weekly Battle Cup tournaments (non-subscribers can take part by purchasing Battle Cup tickets for $1 each) with special emoticons, profile accolades, and Shard awards for winners. To cap it all, Dota Plus members will have access to the Seasonal Terrain that is active during each season.
