When the series initially went off the air in 2016, I published an op-ed in which I discussed what American Idol has meant to me over the years.
"Have you kissed a girl and liked it?" For a quick recap of the week, here are some of the highlights you just won't want to miss!
More than 12 hours after arriving at auditions, she met Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan face to face. But Alyssa proved what I've said countless times - it doesn't matter how old you are because talent is talent. It was a moment that was about to get even better.
Tonight's auditions are filled with your requisite people chasing dreams, sob stories, and teenagers. Sock-obsessed Zack auditions in NY.
Maddie Poppe, 19, Clarksville, Iowa sings with "The Rainbow Connection", and she has a great voice. What unbridled enthusiasm! She also has some serious pipes on her for just 15.
Julica writes a lot of her own music and you can find it by searching for her on Youtube.
Autumn Wood, 27, Katy, TX: The library clerk came in dolled up in what Katy described as "glamazon" style, but her version of "Total Eclipse of the Heart" was freakish: She sounded like Cher with a bad cold. Mara's tour will continue down the hall to the right... She's a senior at Neshaminy High School and a member of the school's choir.
"I've known Ryan now for nearly 16 years". He sings "Thinking Out Loud" by Ed Sheeran, your basic teenage heartthrob fodder.
Kentucky native Layla Spring brought her little sister Dyxie into her audition in front of the judges. She has such a mature and developed voice. Those things don't mess around. Of course, she gets a ticket. Now, go study or something! I mean, maybe. William here loves the ladies and works his 9-to-5 selling lovely women's shoes. Nico Bones had the look of a rock singer, with plenty of attitude, but no sign of talent in his song, "Worms". She seems to be screaming more than singing.
But who I'm going with is 16-year-old Alyssa Raghu, who wowed everyone with her cover of Ariana Grande and Nathan Sykes' "Almost is Never Enough". Hard pass on this whole situation. Later, in Los Angeles, Nico gives a bad, but un-self-conscious, plugged-in performance of nursery rhyme "Nobody Likes Me (Guess I'll Go Eat Worms)".
Ron was born and raised in the Congo and immigrated with his family to the United States when he was 10-years-old. She pauses and then adds: "America doesn't need another star". And she completes that mission with her rendition of Selena's "Techno Cumbia". With that being said, Harper received three yeses from the judges. Way down. Katy takes a fall. We just don't know. Ukrainian singer-songwriter-rapper Misha Gontar. Adorably, Katie gives Benjamin a kiss, knocking him off his feet.
Brandon Diaz, 21, Ashburn, VA: His father emigrated to Cuba as a child and taught Brandon everything he knows about singing. I'm into this whole thing. Katy asked Noah during his audition. Luke Bryan dubbed Zach as "Harry Potter", and Harry Potter never got Katy Perry swooning. She was dead on with her original song, "Yard Sale", which impressed all the panel, particularly Katy, with its distinctive attention to detail. What a roller coaster!
