Senior forward Vincent Edwards and sophomore guard Carsen Edwards scored 26 points apiece as eighth-ranked Purdue avoided an upset by notching an 82-75 victory over Rutgers on Friday in the Big Ten tournament quarterfinals at New York's Madison Square Garden.
Rutgers pushed the pace with 8 points off of fast breaks versus an opposing 4 points off of fast breaks.
What worked in Maryland's favor was that on Thursday night, in beat Michigan State in quadruple overtime in the longest game in the history of the Big Ten Tournament, on both the men's and women's side.
Rutgers junior guard Corey Sanders led the Scarlet Knights with 28 points, including several highlight reel dunks on Indiana's defense.
If anything, for any Rutgers fan, it was a promising glimpse into the next few years under head coach Steve Pikiell. "That team is experienced, and talented, and I'm proud of our guys how we fought for three days".
"I think it just comes down to us not getting enough stops", Juwan Morgan said after the game.
The Boilermakers have been rolling for much of the season, but a three-game losing skid came after that two-point win over the Scarlet Knights.
Sanders picked up where he left off from his 28-point performance by draining on an impossible-to-defend, fallaway jumper on the baseline from 19 feet on the game's opening possession. The Scarlet Knights will come in maybe a bit more exhausted, but will have confidence coming off two straight tournament victories in as many days.
The Hoosiers raced out to a 24-8 lead, getting to the basket easily. While Sanders added eight points against a swarm of Purdue defenders, Deshawn Freeman produced a highlight-reel basket with a reverse layup in the final minute of the half.
Rutgers looked a like a team riding a wave in the first half, taking it to Purdue and shooting 58 percent.
The Hoosiers got off to a hot start, leading 17-3 but it was all downhill after that.
"I think this is a Final Four team, " Pikiell said. "So, we couldn't really move the ball and most of our offense is moving the ball from side-to-side".
Unlike many others, though, I'm not moving off freshman point guard Trae Young as the national player of the year.
HALFTIME: Rutgers leads #8 Purdue 38-35! For the third straight night, the Scarlet Knights had the Garden rocking.

A lot of that was the Knights' doing, with Rutgers being content with allowing the Boilermakers hang out on the perimeter early on, as they struggled from deep to begin the game, missing their first seven attempts before Vincent Edwards and Dakota Mathias found their outside shots. That proved to be the fatal blow for the Scarlet Knights as Edwards iced it by making both free throws to give the Boilermakers an 80-75 lead with 29.4 seconds to play. "We just showed everybody that it's not the same Rutgers that's going to keel over and die", said Mike Williams, a senior from Brooklyn.
One reason that IN failed to win this game was the poor shooting from Robert Johnson.
