In an interview with the Washington Post, the official said that the mass shooting, which left 17 people dead, took some of the heat off the Trump White House for its handling of former staff secretary Rob Porter, whom the White House fired after credible allegations emerged that be beat his two former wives.
Hatch wrote to both Jennie Willoughby and Colbie Holderness, they say that he was under the impression that "political enemies" were out to get Porter 'based on how the situation was described to him'.
He helped organize the White House's response to the tragedy, and accompanied the President to Florida, where Trump visited victims of the shooting before heading to his Mar-a-Lago resort for the long weekend. "Shame on any publication that would print this ― and shame on the politically motivated, morally bankrupt character assassins that would attempt to sully a man's good name".
He continued: "The country needs more honest, principled people like Rob Porter, which is why I hope that this cynical campaign to discredit his character ultimately fails".
When the allegations - and photos of Holderness's bruised eye - surfaced, Hatch walked back his defense of Porter. "In every interaction I've had with Rob, he has been courteous, professional, and respectful". I do not know the details of Rob's personal life.
After details of the alleged abuse came to light, Hatch said he was 'heartbroken, ' didn't know the details of Porter's personal life, and called domestic violence 'abhorrent'.
For instance, last Wednesday, White House Chief of Staff John Kelly was supposed to address the press corps at the daily briefing over the Rob Porter domestic abuse scandal.
Holderness also said she appreciated his apology. "I am praying for Rob and those involved".
Emails and calls for comment from Hatch's office and from Willoughby were not immediately returned to the AP.
"I appreciate his apology", Holderness added.
Porter resigned February 7 after DailyMail.com revealed accusations of domestic abuse from Holderness and Willoughby, though he denied them.
