The reactions to the airport evacuation resulted in speculations that an explosion was heard around the global arrivals terminal.
Normalcy has returned to the OR Tambo International Airport following a passenger evacuation on Monday caused by a suspicious bag.
"As part of normal protocol, since we are a national key point and an global airport with thousands of users and staff, we had to call police".
"As part of safety protocol and to ensure the safety of passengers and customers in the airport terminal building, people were evacuated from the area".
Earlier on Monday, police and the canine unit were called in to investigate after airport security discovered an unattended bag.
The statement said that law enforcement agencies were still trying to identify the owner of the unattended bag. "Everything is back to normal and we have taken the bag to be checked for evidence", she told The Citizen.
Krüger said that travellers were not given any information about what was happening, although those in the airport lounges were briefed 20 minutes before they were meant to evacuate.
Although the airport's Leigh Gunkel-Keuler couldn't confirm whether flights were missed during the police operation, she says the timetable is running normally.
