The NFC Champion Eagles had been viewed as underdogs with New England seeking a third title in four years, and a sixth in 17, but back-up Philadelphia quarterback Nick Foles threw 373 yards and three scores, and even had a receiving touchdown in one of the craziest Super Bowls ever. Posting mediocre numbers in the final two regular season contests, and Philadelphia's 15-10 win over Atlanta in the second-round of the playoffs.
So the Eagles will need to put some points on the board offensively to keep up with Brady, and remember, they are starting backup quarterback Nick Foles with starter Carson Wentz on injured reserve due to a knee injury. Better than Joe Montana, Terry Bradshaw, John Elway, Dan Marino and Fran Tarkenton, or at least more successful.
Foles threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to a leaping Alshon Jeffery in the back of the end zone to give the Eagles a 9-3 lead in the first quarter. However, the only familiar faces from that game are both on the Patriots sideline: quarterback Tom Brady and Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.
"They better win because I want to go to the game and I want to go the parade", she said, eyes almost popping out of her head. "But then to come back to the Philadelphia Eagles, the team that drafted me, the team that I love, the city that I love and never wanted to leave, is really special".
But there hasn't been a huge discrepancy in playoff penalties in Patriots games during Bill Belichick's time as coach.
Given an opening, Brady hits his target like he hits a slant receiver. The network is letting viewers log in for free to enjoy the game.
Asked when that time may come, Brady joked that the camera was out of battery.
"I thought this is great, you know, like, what a great win", she said of Super Bowl LI. "It's going to take a lot to do it".
Through three quarters, the teams already had set a Super Bowl record for total yards. They are here to play physical football, to dominate at the line of scrimmage, and to win on the outside. But, when evaluating players, those shortcomings can't be enough to eliminate a guy who has other traits you're looking for.
Foles closed the first half in spectacular fashion as the Eagles showed up the Patriots with their own special play.
But just who was Lombardi and why has his name been placed on the most sought-after trophy in American sport? "No wonder I'm in love".
"I don't get it. So, I feel like I'm willing to make the commitment to doing those things, I feel like my body will allow me to do that".
His third touchdown, this one to Gronkowski, was added to by a Gostkowski extra point that gave New England their first lead.
Those quarterbacks were (occasionally) great despite themselves. It wasn't an entirely surprising performance from the Patriots defense, who routinely gave up lots of yards this season but held strong in the red zone, but it was certainly out of character for the Eagles, who finished fourth in the National Football League in total defense this year with 307 total yards allowed per game.
"Jim Schwartz's scheme is built on penetration, and when you can get up the field, you disrupt everything", former New York Giants center Shaun O'Hara told philadelphiaeagles.com.
Perhaps, then, that's what makes the excitement of the potential of the Eagles winning Sunday's Super Bowl. "I'd say that's been a real positive for me. You've got to know how to deal". Foles, who had an fantastic Pro Bowl season in 2013, has played well enough that if the Eagles wanted to trade him in the offseason, they might find a suitor. If I want to scream at somebody, I can scream at somebody.
