"We've also had numerous inquiries from Sam's Club employees", BJ's said in a press release. The store closures will be in the towns of Naperville, Wheeling, Batavia, Streamwood, Matteson, Moline, and Romeoville.
The three shuttered New Jersey Sam's Clubs are in Mount Olive, Linden and West Windsor.
Wholly owned by affiliates of Leonard Green & Partners, CVC Capital Partners and its management team, BJ's operates 215 warehouse clubs and 133 BJ's Gas locations in 16 states. The closures affect thousands of employees nationwide. The store wasn't underperforming, Hatfield said, but the company made a decision to close the location as part of a review regarding the "right mix of clubs" and emphasis on e-commerce under CEO John Furner. "We will be closing some clubs, and we notified them today".
The company also responded on Twitter to members curious about what would happen to their memberships, advising them to continue to visit the remaining Sam's Clubs while also providing a membership cancellation link.
The retail giant Walmart is shutting the doors to 63 Sam's Club locations across the U.S.
Armstead said the city will address the issue by holding a job fair from 10 a.m.to 1 p.m. on January 22 at the Linden Multi Purpose Center, 1025 John Street, sponsored through the Linden First employment program in conjunction with other local businesses. The fair will be held from 10 a.m.to 1 p.m at the Multi Purpose Center, 1025 John Street.
The restructuring comes the day after Walmart announced it will raise its starting hourly wages to $11, expand parental leave benefits, and give cash bonuses to employees of up to $1,000.
