Late first half surge lifts No. 1 Michigan State over Maryland

Freshman Jaren Jackson Jr. had 15 points, three blocks and two steals and Cassius Winston scored 10 points with eight assists for Michigan State, which led 44-32 at halftime before using a 15-0 run late to pull away after the break for a 14th successive win.

MSU opens the 2018 portion of the schedule, concluding a two-game homestand against Northwestern at 7 p.m., Weds., Jan. 3 at the Breslin Center.

Tra holder had a game-high 24 points for the Sun Devils, who led 11-0 before dropping to 12-2.

Freshman Bruno Fernando finished with four fouls to go along with seven points, seven rebounds, and three turnovers. When the Spartans don't force their own errors, it makes it awfully hard for opponents to slow down Michigan State's momentum once it gets rolling.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Keep in mind that the opponents were Houston Baptist, Long Beach State, Cleveland State and Savannah State, but Michigan State became the first team in 11 years to score 100 points in four straight games.

IU runs onto the court at the beginning of the Hoosiers' game against the Michigan State Spartans on Thursday at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The Spartans rank fourth in offensive efficiency, while the Terrapins are 21st in defensive efficiency.

Just a week after Maryland (13-4, 2-2) scored just 18 points in the first half in its nonconference finale against Maryland Baltimore County, it had surpassed that mark less than seven minutes into Thursday night's contest. Purdue and Michigan State are clearly the top two teams in the conference, but no one else has really proven anything. Games featuring the Spartans have a slight tendency to go over the O/U total (53.8 percent). That game will hopefully take the bad taste out of the Terps' mouths.

Miles Bridges is the top Spartans scorer this year with 16.9 PPG and 7.7 RPG, while Ward has 15.4 PPG and 7.4 RPG.

The Gahanna, Ohio native is shooting 72.1 percent on field goals.

Maryland is 2-2 ATS on the road with 2 overs and 2 unders.

Meanwhile, the Buckeyes are 5-2 ATS in their last seven versus the Big 10 and 2-5 ATS in their last seven home games.

The Maryland men's basketball team lost at No. 1-ranked Michigan State, 91-61, January 4.

Both of these teams are great at blocking the ball.

The Terrapins started fast and raced out to an early 5-0 lead.

Both of these teams are exceptional at rebounding the ball. Maryland has covered the spread in four straight lined games. Purdue (14-2, 3-0) lost in Lincoln a year ago, but 7-foot-2 center Isaac Haas was limited to 13 minutes because of a hip pointer.

Michigan State is 4-1 ATS with 4 overs and 1 under over their last five games. Rebounding is also a strength but the Terrapins average 40 per game as well, but injuries could cause that to waver.

Ward was limited to a season-worst three points in 11 minutes of court action in the Spartan's December 5 meeting with Rutgers, but the sophomore has shot 60 percent or higher in every game since then, and has shot 75 percent or better the last five games.
