What are your New Year's resolutions?

What are your New Year's resolutions?

I haven't made a New Year's Resolution since I was in college, because they've always struck me as a bit like lines drawn deeply in the sand: bold and dramatic and exciting.

That's why the process of habit-forming is slow, deliberate, step-by-step and highly effective at creating long-term change.

Generally, New Year's resolutions are health-based with people vowing to take more care of their bodies in the coming year.

This is why making January 1 the lone day to change your life proves so ineffective: 1) If it has an annual start date, odds are you're brain will assume there's an annual "stop date" - December 31, perhaps; 2) If you fail, well, you can wait until next January 1, right? Only 5 percent of people planned to get a better job. This list can include small pleasures, such as a new music album or a book, and it can include the bigger things, such as a vacation.

But they weren't the only ones to make resolutions.

7News spoke to a doctor who says resolutions should be more specific, but make sure they are attainable.

For those setting resolutions in 2018, there is some good news: Even if the majority of them fail - and fail fast - there's evidence that just making them in the first place is better than not. And all of us can always improve.

I used to mock this tradition as well. I was trying so hard to save all the friendships and acquaintances. This was a way of turning myself into a better person. One of the ways of dealing with this problem was, I realised, meditation. "My daughter is a vegan and she says she feels wonderful - not that I could do that, I love my cheese too much". We have to put in work to see the changes that we want in our lives. I felt like all my friends had moved on and were doing something important. It is easy to lose focus when we have too many balls in the air.

Probably most people you know make new year's resolutions and they've been making them for donkey years.

Baby New Year is a mythical symbol of rebirth dating back to ancient Greece. I have often wondered why some people are prepared to spend so much money on a celebration. When you live within your means and save 15% of your income, good things happen.

About 4,000 years ago, before Roman Emperor Julius Caesar established January 1 as the beginning of the new year, celebrations in honor of the new year were held in mid-March during what would be the planting season in the Sumerian calendar. And bad things get prevented or cut off before they cause long-term damage.

One of my aunts was a smoker, and every year we suggested to her that her resolution should be to stop smoking. And then, there was me - staying in the same city surrounded by the same people. I don't want to go to another funeral thinking that I should have made time to visit the person who passed away.

Charles Warner | The Union Times The message on this electronic sign at the Union County Stadium is another reminder that the old year of 2017 is about to pass into the history books and give way to the new year of 2018.
