Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star guard Isaiah Thomas has taken another step in his comeback and was assigned to the team's G League affiliate in Canton on Thursday, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
Thomas is on assignment in order to officially participate in the Charge full-team practice, slated for Thursday. The All-Star guard has missed the entire season as he recovers from a hip injury. Because the veteran-laden Cavaliers don't get chances to play five-on-five on practice days, the G League stint will allow Thomas to receive plenty of full-court run. The Cavs acquired Thomas in August as a part of the trade that sent Kyrie Irving to the Boston Celtics and estimated that he'd make his Cleveland debut by the end of December.
To help Thomas prepare for a return to National Basketball Association action and a subsequent playoff run, the Cavs are sending Thomas to their G League affiliate in Canton to get in some five-on-five practices.
After wrapping up the calendar year with the Bulls, Golden State Warriors and Utah Jazz in the coming days, the Cavs will return to action on January 2 when they host the Portland Trailblazers.
The Cavs and Thomas are eyeing a return after the holidays, with a possible return date of January 3 against the Celtics sitting right there to make for a fitting narrative.
